The Canadian Dental Specialties Association (CDSA) supports up to two student awards each year. This award recognizes student excellence in research at a Canadian dental specialty training program. The value of the award will be up to a maximum of $500 CAD for each student. One cash award will be presented during each application cycle.

Award Criteria (Eligibility)

The award is given to students undertaking dental specialty training in a recognized Canadian dental specialty, and who have been accepted for an Oral Presentation at a national or international scientific conference.

The national or international conference must be scheduled within six (6) months of the application submission. Applications for the award will also be considered for Oral Presentations already delivered at a national or international conference within 6 months before or 6 months after each application deadline.

A student may receive the International Research Presentation Award only once during their lifetime.

Selection Criteria

The CDSA International Research Presentation Award Sub-Committee will review all applications and make recommendations based on the criteria below. All eligible applications will then be voted on by the Board of Directors, using a grading scale.

  • Eligibility: If you meet the Award Criteria you will be considered for the CDSA International Research Presentation Award.
  • Originality: Does the abstract contribute to the state of knowledge in the dental specialty?
  • Quality: Does the abstract meet minimum scientific requirements (i.e., clear objectives, appropriate methods, reporting of results, and valid conclusions)?

Abstract Submission Guidelines

  1. Abstract titles are required to be 20 words or less and entered in title case format.
  2. Authors: Each author who meaningly contributed to the research project along with their affiliation should be included in the submission.
  3. Abstract text: All abstracts should be 300 words or less. Do not include your title or authors in the abstract text — these items will be collected and counted separately. Do not include references. If the abstract is based on research that was funded entirely or partially by an outside source, then be sure to enter the appropriate information (funding agency and grant number if applicable).
  4. Content of the abstract: The abstract should include the following sections:
    1. Background: include a brief introduction along with the main objective or research question
    2. Methods: a brief description of the methodology used
    3. Results: A detailed description of the main research findings, including data and where appropriate, statistics.
    4. Conclusion: a brief summary of the main findings and study implications
